“Before You Hire” Checklist

When you have your own independent practice, the staff you hire are crucial to your success.  Before you start interviewing, here are a few must-do items to accomplish first.

  • Get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and find out whether you need state and local tax ID numbers.

  • Decide if you want to hire independent contractors or employees. There are benefits to hiring each, so weigh the pros and cons. You may also want to discuss with your accountant.

  • Set up your employee benefits. Healthcare and benefits are important when hiring (and maintaining) staff. Laws require some benefits (Social Security, Workers’ Comp, Disability) but others are optional (health insurance; retirement plan; employee incentives).

  • Develop an office manual outlining policies such as: attendance; dress code; expectations; workplace guidelines

  • Create your company calendar and your compensation plan for holiday, vacation, and sick leave.

  • Choose a company to manage your payroll. It’s a headache you may not want to deal with, especially as your staff grows with you.

With RESIDEN, you can minimize your staffing costs.  Our system automates patient check-in and guides patients through the facility, so you’ll need fewer employees to walk them to and from exam rooms.
